Earth Day: An Excuse to Promote Green Practices in Your Building

BOMA Baltimore is constantly encouraging our members to keep up with green standards and ensure that buildings are functioning as efficiently as possible. With the 7-Point Challenge and 360 Performance Program, we try to help think of ways your building could be even better. That’s why we want to stress the importance of Earth Day on April 22, 2011. Liberty Property Trust, a BOMA Baltimore member, has two programs planned to celebrate Earth Day that may give you ideas for what your building could do to help bring your tenants together and raise awareness for energy sustainability in your community.

Liberty is hosting its 3rdAnnual Cell Phones for Soldiers campaign. Liberty’s buildings in 20 cities across the nation are joining together to collect cell phones for military members serving overseas, allowing them to contact their families. This program promotes recycling and keeps electronics out of landfills.

In addition, Liberty is also sponsoring the NAIOP Maryland Chapter’s Living Classroom on Friday, April 29.  A Liberty team will work to construct floating wetlands and picnic tables in support of the Baltimore-Washington based program which works to strengthen communities and inspire young people to achieve their potential through hands-on education and job training, using urban, natural, and maritime resources as “living classrooms.”

Some other simple ideas for your building include:

-educating tenants about the green practices already in place

-ensuring tenants are following proper recycling procedure

-hosting a recycling competition between offices to promote good waste management habits

-installing or providing water filtration systems in kitchens to reduce the use of plastic bottles

Get inspired! Reach out to the local community or schools and volunteer in programs already in place in your area.
