In the United States, buildings account for 39% of total energy use and 38% of the carbon dioxide emissions. As the environmental impact of buildings becomes more apparent, a new field called green building is gaining momentum.

Green or sustainable building is the practice of creating healthier and more resource-efficient models of construction, renovation, operation, maintenance, and demolition. Yet sustainability is no longer just about doing the right thing for the planet. It’s about doing the right thing for the bottom line. Today, most green initiatives can have a significant return-on-investment and are simply necessary to stay competitive.

BOMA Baltimore has made it a priority to help our members move to the forefront of the green movement by providing assistance and information on:

We are also always looking at green products and services that will maximize value, optimize building performance and decrease operating expenses.

How BOMA International is Making Sustainability Standard Practice

Recognizing that green best practices make sound business sense for commercial building operators and owners, BOMA International has developed a variety of initiatives to enhance the sustainability efforts of its members:

  • BOMA’s 7–Point Challenge
    An industry-wide challenge to realize a 30 percent savings in energy usage by 2012. One hundred BOMA member companies and BOMA local associations have already endorsed the Challenge, further proof that what’s good for the environment is also good business.
  • BOMA’s Energy Efficiency Program (BEEP)
    Developed with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), BEEP is a major educational initiative that teaches no- and low-cost building operating strategies for optimizing equipment, people and practices. To date, more than 14,000 industry professionals have benefited from the program.
  • BOMA’s Sustainable Operations Series (SOS)
    A series of four webinars offering practical solutions for green building operations.
  • BOMA Energy Performance Contract (BEPC)
    A model developed in collaboration with the Clinton Climate Initiative that allows companies to perform energy efficiency retrofits on existing buildings. These improvements are paid for with the energy and operational savings created by the expenditures.
  • The Green Resource Energy and Environment Network (G.R.E.E.N)
    Resources to help BOMA members wade through the sea of "green" to identify the
    strategies that work for their portfolios.
