In an effort to offer relevant educational opportunities to the BOMA Baltimore membership, we have teamed up with the Community College of Baltimore County to offer this licensing examination preparation class for those building engineers interested in obtaining a Maryland Stationary Engineer’s license.  In recent years, the Maryland State Board of Stationary Engineers has expanded this licensing requirement to all “plants of machinery” within a building, not only boiler systems.

The Maryland Stationary Engineers Act ("Act") governs equipment that operates at a pressure of more than 15 PSI and 30 or more horsepower (1,003,000 Btu/hr or1034 lb/hr steam or greater) with the following operating horsepower limits for each grade:

·        Grade 5 -- 30 to 99 horsepower (in a building not open for public use)
·        Grade 4 - 30 to 99 horsepower (in any building regardless of use)
·        Grade 3 - 100 to 299 horsepower (in any building)
·        Grade 2 - 300 to 499 horsepower (in any building)
·        Grade 1 - 500 or more horsepower (in any building)

This course is designed to enable the student to learn about pressure boiler systems and related plant equipment in preparation for the Maryland Stationary Engineers 3rd and 4th grade licensing exam.

 Course Topics:
·        Boiler safety
·        Boiler operation principles
·        Boiler accessories
·        Combustion and computer-assisted combustion controls

Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

·        Utilize testing procedures, i.e. application process and testing locations
·        Explain basics of boiler safety and operations
